The maritime history of Indonesia is shown by information about the former maritime kingdoms in the archipelago, by Dutch East Indian ship models, by several cannons and a nice scale model of the island Onrust which was the former shipyard for repair of the East Indian ships.
In the field of traditional sailing the museum owns ship models out of the entire Indonesian archipelago. There is an exhibition of shipbuilding tools and descriptions of the maritime traditions and folklore can be found.

Marker buoy

The museum focuses on the field of modern shipping by exposition of various navigational aids, map-making by the Indonesian navy, information about lighthouses and old pictures of voyages of the KPM ships once taken by their passengers.

Furthermore there is the collection "Biological Oceanography" with information regarding occurrence and biodiversity of fish populations in the coastal areas of Indonesia with some nice examples of maritime flora and fauna.

A particular interesting collection of the Museum Bahari are the traditional sailing vessels from the entire Indonesian archipelago, hence a pick at random from this collection:

Pinisi

The pinisi is a two-masted schooner which carries seven to eight sails. The meaning of pinisi is: 'full with aroma of the sea when listening to the sound of wind and waves'.

Pinisi Early in the 20th century these vessels were built by the people of Ara and Lemo-lemo mainly for the seafaring people of Bira, a town in South Sulawesi. The first pinisi were relatively small with a length of 10 - 15 meter and a capacity of 20 - 30 tons.

During the Second World War the pinisi were primarily deployed by the Japanese occupation for hostilities hence they were a frequent target during air raids of the Allied forces. Although the fleet of pinisi largely was destroyed after the capitulation of the Japanese empire this ship type still played an important role in the development of the new Republic of Indonesia.

Lancang Lancang Kuning

The lancang is a sailing boat which had commonly been used in the past by the people of Sumatra, Banten and Kalimantan.
Museum Bahari possesses the 'Lancang Kuning' or 'Yellow Lancang'. This pleasure craft was used by the King and his retinue. The lancang also was used by highly placed persons as the admiral and his commanders of the Kingdom.

Gelati

Gelati

The gelati is a kind of fishing boat which plays an influential role in Strait Bali (the narrow between the islands Java and Bali). This vessel, nicknamed by the Madurese population as Jung Raje, has a crew of 18 seamen.
The ribs as well as the shell of the ship consist of teak wood. The average length of the vessel is 12 meter with a breadth of 2.6 meter. Out of the triangular ship's mast a speaker often sounds the traditional Dangdut music during the trip.
