The Museum Bahari is one of 8 museums under the control of the Dinas Kebudayaan dan permuseuman provinsi daerah khusus Ibukota Jakarta (also known as DKI Jakarta). This government institution has a huge influence on the ins and outs of the museum as they are the only source of funding on the moment. Maintenance of the buildings, budget for the exhibitions and salary for the staff are all financed out of DKI pockets. The current management of the museum aims to get additional funding by approaching private maritime companies who do acknowledge the significance of the one and only maritime museum in Indonesia. Evidently, due to the national bureaucracy this is quite a struggle.
The Museum Bahari has its own vision, mission and strategy. In brief, the museum management aims to present the Museum Bahari in Jakarta as a key institution for preservation of the maritime culture in Indonesia and to emphasize the significance of this museum.
